Course Description
Maryse Condé, born in 1937 in Pointe-à-Pitre, is known worldwide as a prolific, award-winning novelist. Her stories take place in the Caribbean, West Africa, America, and Paris. The success of her novels reflects the difficulties Condé overcame not only as a woman, but also, as a writer. This class will be based on texts such as I, Tituba, Black witch of Salem, Crossing the Mangrove, and Desirada. Through our readings, we will analyze how Condé confronts racial stereotypes, complicating and personalizing the issues of francophone identity.
